Podcasts as an advertising opportunity for designers

Given the myriad of things that vie for our attention these days, it is important to set yourself apart from the competition with your advertising. About 10 years ago you could get noticed by creating a blog. There were far fewer design blogs back then than there are now, and posts about design and the industry were sure to catch the eye. That’s how I got to my customers. Today, however, there are already countless design blogs, only a few designers have podcasts.

More and more users are listening to podcasts on a regular basis:

If you are a designer and want to promote yourself online, a podcast might be for you. If you also want to visually show off your design skills to your prospects, you can create a video podcast. The advantage of audio podcasts, however, is that users can listen to them anywhere, for example, while driving a car or at the gym.

Think about which topics could be interesting and helpful for your target group. For example, if you want to target smaller businesses, you can make a list of business marketing topics, such as B. Tips on how customers can create simple graphics on their own, advice on enhancing photos, and briefing with a graphic designer. Think about what questions your target group might have, which you can answer in a video, for example.

Show your design skills and introduce yourself

Customers purchase a product or service if they know and like the provider and consider him competent. You can accomplish all of this with a podcast. You can prove your profound design knowledge and show your personality at the same time. It’s a lot easier to tell if you like a person by hearing their voice or seeing them.

Conduct interviews with interesting people and forge relationships

You don’t have to watch the podcast alone, you can get a co-moderator on board, possibly someone from a related industry, such as B. a marketer. Another alternative would be to interview guests who are interesting to your target audience. For example, you could have a conversation with a social media expert who can provide tips for smaller businesses or a copywriter who can provide advice on how to write marketing copy. Not only do you offer your audience added value, but you also establish relationships with people who can be useful to you in your work. Also, your guests will surely share the interview with their own audience, which will increase the reach of your podcast.

You will be perceived as a design expert

If your design podcast is successful and you gain an audience, you will be perceived as an expert in your field. As a result, more and more people know your name or your company name and are more likely to turn to you when they need a designer.

Once you have a list of potential ideas for your podcast or interview guests, you can design an episode. Using bullet points, write down the topics you want to cover. Then keep going through each bullet point until you have completed the required content for the recording.

Recording a podcast

I recommend that you get a good USB microphone and headphones. You can also use a headset at the beginning, but the sound quality is usually not that good. There are many different ways to record a podcast, depending on your requirements. If you are recording alone and have an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription, you have access to Adobe Audition. You can both record and edit audio with Adobe Audition, and there are plenty of free tutorials on YouTube to get you started. Alternatively, you can use Garage Band, which is installed on Mac computers. If you are looking for free software, the open-source Audacity program might be for you. You can also record individual episodes with an iPad or a smartphone with a compatible microphone and suitable app.

If you are recording with a co-moderator or with a guest who is not in the same location as you, you can use Skype. Skype has a built-in function for recording calls. However, both conversation partners are recorded on one track (one recording – which is not ideal for processing). Alternatively, if you work with a Mac, you can purchase the Ecamm Call Recorder or Pamela for Skype for PCs. With these programs, you can record two tracks, one for each person. A free online alternative for recording up to three people per call is Zencastr. Zencastr allows you to create a link that you can then share with your guests. Then just click on “Record” and get started. With Adobe Audition, Audacity and Garageband you can also edit your podcast after recording.

Create graphics for your podcast

Create a square graphic that represents your brand and your podcast. This is required to register your podcast in directories such as Apple Podcast, Google Play and Sticher. Podbean also has its own directory. With Podbean you also have the option to automatically publish your podcast to YouTube. If you create a square image for each episode, Podbean will automatically convert your audio file to a video based on this image.

Share the podcast

First, split your podcast into podcast directories. Then you can take pictures with quotes or video clips for each episode and share them on social media. To create a simple video clip, select a section of audio up to a minute in length, create an image that matches it, then combine the two using an app such as B. Headliners. Don’t forget to share your podcast with your existing contacts and ask your friends and family to recommend your podcast to others.
